ALEXANDRA GULEA : Εμιγκρέδες της Ρουμανίας
Οι ταρραχές, η πείνα, η φτώχεια, η ανέχεια και η αδικία που σημειώνονται στο ταλαιπωρημένο πεδίο των Βαλκανίων, και πιο συγκεκριμένα στη Ρουμανία, αποτελούν αντικείμενο παρατήρησης και έμπνευσης για τη σκηνοθέτιδα. «Όπου υπάρχει θλίψη ο τόπος είναι ιερός», λέει ο Oscar Wilde, και η Alexandra Gulea διαθέτει μια μοναδική ευαισθησία στον τρόπο που κινηματογραφεί τον ανθρώπινο πλούτο σ’ αυτούς τους ιερούς τόπους.
Το Pugnant Film Series επιμελήθηκε ένα πρόγραμμα 107 λεπτών, απαρτιζόμενο απ’ τις ταινίες Valea Jiului – Notes (2018), God plays Sax, the Devil Violin(2004) και Today I was Young and Pretty(2007). Είναι η πρώτη φορά που έργο της σκηνοθέτιδας θα παρουσιαστεί σε κάποια εγχώρια προβολή. Τέλος, η Alexandra θα δώσει το παρόν και μετά την προβολή των ταινιών θα ακολουθήσει q&a.

God plays Sax, the Devil Violin (2004 – 42’)
Ύπνος, φαγητό, χάπια. Και πάλι ύπνος,
πάλι φαγητό, πάλι χάπια. Αυτές είναι οι μόνες δραστηριότητες που υπάρχουν στη
ζωή των 300 ατόμων που ζουν στο ψυχιατρικό άσυλο στο Gura Ocnitei της
Ρουμανίας. Οι περισσότεροι ζουν εδώ πάνω από 10 χρόνια, ενώ κάποιοι κατέφτασαν
από άλλα ψυχιατρικά κέντρα. Μεταξύ αυτών είναι καθηγητές, εργάτες, μηχανικοί,
αγρότες, μοναχές.
Άτομα με σωματική αναπηρία ζουν μαζί με σχιζοφρενείς. Καταθλιπτικοί μαζί με άτομα με ειδικές ανάγκες. Σε δωμάτια των 8 και 12 ατόμων, ενώ πολλές φορές 2 άτομα μοιράζονται το ίδιο κρεβάτι. Η κλινική δεν παρέχει καμία θεραπεία ή κάποιο καθημερινό πρόγραμμα που θα ήταν απαραίτητο για την επανένταξη αυτών των ατόμων στην κοινωνία.
Εδώ έχει φτιαχτεί μια μικροκοινωνία. Οι
ασθενείς φιλιώνουν μεταξύ τους, παντρεύονται, χωρίζουν, πλένουν ο ένας τον
άλλο, ή ταΐζουν ο ένας τον άλλο. Μέσα στους κόλπους της κλινικής οι ασθενείς
έχουν φτιάξει τη δική τους κοινωνική δομή. Μια κοινωνική δομή με τις δικές της
ιεραρχείες, τα δικά της αφεντικά, και το δικό της παρεμπόριο. Ο καφές και τα
τσιγάρα έχουν γίνει το επίσημο νόμισμα εδώ, μπορείς να γοράσεις μ’ αυτά ένα
μικρό ταξίδι στο διπλανό χωριό. Στα τραγούδια τους εναποθέτουν το κοινό τους
βίωμα και ενίοτε τραγουδώντας, καταφέρνουν να ανοίξουν μια πόρτα σ’ έναν άλλο
κόσμο.
Today I was Young and Pretty (2007 – 52’)
Η ταινία τρυπώνει στην καθημερινότητά τους, και αποτυπώνει πως η αντίληψή αυτών των ανθρώπων για την πραγματικότητα έχει αφομοιωθεί στη μουσική τους. Η πίστη στις δεισιδαιμονίες, τα χτυπήματα της μοίρας, η επικοινωνία με τους νεκρούς, είναι στοιχεία που γίνονται πηγές έμπνευσης και έκφρασης, χαράς και θλίψης.
Το αντισυμβατικό αυτό ντοκιμαντέρ της Alexandra Gulea μας κάνει ένα μουσικό ταξίδι στην καρδιά της ρουμάνικης τσιγγάνικης μουσικής.

ALEXANDRA GULEA : Émigrés from Romania
Her family history follows the tumultuous history of Balkans.
Her grandmother, with whom she shares her name,
dies at the age of 93 in a communist flat located on the « Victory of
socialism » avenue in Bucharest. Her grand grandfather, who was part of a group
of militants fighting for the Aromanian cause, was killed violently by the
greeks. They were shot in the back, hanged in a forest, or beheaded. The
aromanian minority doesn’t find a place, they are obliged to flee from Greece,
then, after some time from Bulgaria, to finaly settle in Romania where the rise
of the communist regime kneels and emprisons them.
The frustrations, the hunger, the poverty, the injustice that we can witness at
the Balkans are the main topics of inspiration of Alexandra Gulea’s cinema. «Where
there is sorrow there is holy ground», Oscar Wilde says, and also Alexandra Gulea
has a unique sensitive cinematic way to record the human majesty at this holy
grounds.
Pugnant Film Series curated a 107 minutes program, including the films Valea Jiului – Notes (2018), God plays Sax, the Devil Violin(2004) και Today I was Young and Pretty(2007). It’s the first time that we can see movies by Alexandra Gulea at Greece. Alexandra will be present, and after the screenings there will be a q & a.

ABOUT THE FILMS
Valea Jiului – Notes (2018 – 14’)
Children
of the Jiu Valley are familiar with roads. Theirs but especially those of the
adults. Roads through the tunnel, the mountains or the Valley. All the roads
seem made to leave as well as to return. The parents of these children, once
the inhabitants of an old industrial area of Romania, take now long roads to
reach the West, wherever they may find work. They return too seldomly. They
send money. Their children are a lot like orphans. Many of them experience
depression. Some choose to take the fatal road to Paradise or Hell. Maybe with
the hope of coming back to a kinder vale.
God plays Sax, the Devil Violin (2004 – 42’)
Sleep,
food, pills. Again sleep, again food, again pills. These are the only
activities that exist in the life of the 300 people who live in this
psychiatric asylum in Gura Ocnitei, Romania. Most of them have been living here
for over 10 years, some where transferred from other psychiatric centers. Among
them are professors, day-workers, engineers, peasants, nuns.
Physically handicapped persons live along with schizophrenics, depressive and mentally handicapped in rooms of 8 to 12, often two people share a bed. The clinics administration does not propose a therapy or daily program which would be essential for the recovery and reintegration into society of the patients.
A closed society has formed. Patients become friends, they marry, split up again, wash one another, or feed each other. A social order has established itself among the people, which works paralel to the primary regime of the institution. Hierarchys, bosses, commerce and dependencies have formed. Coffee and cigarettes have become the official currency, a trip to the next village a small vacation. Their collective experience in helping each other to overcome their present condition is often found in the songs they sing, moments of being able to escape to another world.
Today I was Young and Pretty (2007 – 52’)
Most of the Gypsy population of
Clejani, a village located some 50 km away from Bucharest, traditionally
consists of musicians going back for many generations.
The film shows how the musicians relate to daily life and the way their perception of reality influences their music. Firm belief in superstitions, the unavoidable blows of fate, communication with the dead, become the sources of inspiration and expression, of joy and sorrow.
Alexandra Gulea’s unconventional documentary takes us on a musical journey to the origins of romanian gypsy music.
